John Isaacs Design, established by John Isaacs in 1991, provides art direction, editorial, and publishing services to cultural institutions and commercial clients. We have designed complete graphic identity systems for clients as diverse as J. Mendel, a long-established New York and Paris-based couture fashion house, Elco, the world's premier manufacturer of high-end electric-powered boats, and Bard College, a major liberal arts college.
Since 1999, our focus has been on the development and design of art books for major publishers. Notable publications have included career reviews of Turner Prize nominee Isaac Julien and legendary multimedia artist Carolee Schneemann, recent work by photographer Joel Sternfeld, and a comprehensive survey of modern Chinese architecture by Peter G. Rowe, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
We frequently work with writers and artists to conceptualize and develop books, and are currently preparing, in conjunction with White Box, an internationally respected nonprofit art space in New York, a series of books on contemporary art to be published under the imprint White Boox. The series includes It Is, a compilation of articles, essays, and illustration from the critically important journal that served as the mouthpiece of the Abstract Expressionist movement in the 1950s, and a career review of Conrad Atkinson, one of Britain's most influential artists.
To all its projects, John Isaacs Design brings a clear awareness of the interplay among the various components of publication development: concept, strategy, cost, structure, style, materials and the vital relation of text to image.
